Episode 480: Just a Little Thunder

Welcome dear listeners to another episode of Anime Pulse, this week Red and Ryo return to the standard format and bring us back into the reviews. IRL news sort of devolves into video game talk, with topics like Ryo’s fear of large bugs and the thunderstorm at Red’s place. Then it’s on to industry news, where we have a story on otaku scientists naming galaxies and vocaloids finally making it into school textbooks. And last but not least the reviews, as Ryo roasts I My Mi and Red intrigues Ryo with Chivalry of a Failed Knight.

  1. I’ve never heard Conan O’Brien be called a “straight laced guy” I haven’t watched his show in, I don’t know at least a decade, but I watch his “Clueless Gamer” segment all the time. I don’t think of him as stiff at all.

Anyway, Hatsune Miku was actually on David Letterman, not Conan O’Brien. I think the failure there was that David Letterman was not what you would call a “hip dude.” It was quite a bad meeting of East and West.

  2. What YotaruVegeta said! Conan has a rich comedy background. And yeah, it was Letterman – who also has a strong comedy background, but yeah, not a “young hip dude” or even quite “wacky cool old guy” by the time he retired.

I do agree that Colbert is a slightly better fit, since he’s got sort of a gamely attitude towards new and interesting things (he was the one who hosted BabyMetal as musical guest). But really in general both acts probably got alot of “wtf?” from their relatively mainstream US audiences. But I think that’s a little fun in its own right. 😛

  3. To be fair, Letterman now has a gnarly beard. At least there’s that. Not as good as JK Simmons’ beard, but still impressive.

I think Jimmy Fallon would be best suited to host Babymetal. He’s the “young, hip” guy out of all the late night hosts.
